Call
to Action
The following
petition was created in April 2006 and signed by dozens of adventurers
participating in the North Pole season, including Prince
Albert of Monoco whose own expedition was highlighting the threat
of global warming. To add your name to this petition please email
us your name, nationality and endorsement of the petition. Please
note if you were a member of a North Pole expedition (if you wen't
that's OK!)
Global Call to Action
We, the global community
of adventurers engaged in 2006 North Pole expeditions, call upon
our national leaders to unite in common voice to acknowledge and
seek solutions to the global threat of climate change.
WHEREAS:
--the ecosystems of the polar regions are among the world's most
delicate and sensitive to change;
--changes in the polar ecosystems presage pending changes in the
world's most populated regions;
--a convergence of global research data confirms that the polar
ice caps, a key stabilizing factor in world weather systems, are
diminishing rapidly:
--scientific projections indicate these changes could bring the
world to a tipping point of irreversible and cataclysmic climate
change in a few decades or less:
NOW THEREFORE:
--we attest to the ecoystem changes we witness in our own polar
endeavors, from diminishing polar ice packs and continental ice
shelves to the retreat of glaciers and the habitat threats that
warmer temperatures represent for arctic wildlife;
--we acknowledge that the preponderence of evidence indicates these
changes are directly related to global dependence upon fossil fuels;
--we believe these changes can be stopped and reversed if there
is an immediate global quest to embrace alternate energy sources;
--we call upon our national leaders to make 2006 the year in which
the global community acknowledges that the destiny of humankind
lies in our own hands and that this global threat requires an immediate
global solution.
